Information this site collects

This site uses privacy-minimized, first-party analytics to answer simple questions such as:

– How did readers find the site?

– Which pages received visits?

– Which sources led to newsletter signup attempts?

The analytics may record the page visited, the referring website’s domain, campaign labels such as utm_source, outbound-link destinations, and whether a newsletter form was submitted.

It does not collect names, email addresses, form contents, persistent visitor IDs, browser fingerprints, or cross-site browsing histories. Raw IP addresses are not retained in the analytics data. The analytics collector also honors the browser’s Do Not Track setting.

The site temporarily uses browser session storage to remember referral and campaign information while you move between pages. This normally disappears when the browser session ends.

Optional analytics and the Kit form are off until you allow them through the site’s privacy choices. The site stores your privacy choices in local browser storage for up to 180 days so it can remember them. You can change or withdraw your choices at any time using the Privacy choices link in the footer.

Like most websites, the hosting provider may process technical information – such as an IP address, browser information, requested page, and request time – to deliver and secure the site.

Newsletter signup

Newsletter subscriptions are handled by Kit. If you subscribe, Kit processes the information you enter, such as your email address, so I can send the newsletter and manage subscriptions.

When Kit’s signup form loads or is submitted, Kit may also receive technical information such as the current page address, referring page, campaign parameters, and browser or device information. Kit may use cookies or similar browser storage to operate the form and remember subscription status. Kit confirms that its forms use a cookie for this purpose.

Every newsletter includes an unsubscribe link.

How this information is used I use this information to:

– operate and secure the website;

– understand which promotional sources are useful;

– deliver and manage the newsletter; and

– diagnose technical problems.

I do not sell or rent visitor information or use it to build cross-site advertising profiles.

Information is shared only with service providers needed to operate the site – principally the website host and Kit – or when disclosure is legally required.

Your choices

You may:

– enable Do Not Track in your browser to prevent this site’s first-party analytics collector from recording your visit;

– block or clear cookies and browser storage through your browser settings, although this may affect the newsletter form;

– remove campaign parameters such as utm_source from a link before visiting;

– unsubscribe from the newsletter using the link in any email; or

– contact me with a privacy question or request.
